In 1890 Gintarō Higuchi published a picture book entitled Kyōiku Chōrui No E (Pictures of Common Birds for Education). The book’s twelve pages of bird pictures are shown below. Click on a picture to enlarge it. The anonymous artist drew his picture subjects only semi-accurately which was the norm for nineteenth century Japanese bird art.
